Asset Item in R10

Note: this blog is superseded by Asset Item and Bill of Material, and Categorization and Category Attributes in R11 available in Spring 2018.
  • Asset Category and Sub-Category is replaced by categorization hierarchy.
  • Asset Group is renamed to Asset Item from R11d.

Category, Sub-Category and Asset Item

Assets are grouped in the following levels:

  • Category: the highest level of asset grouping. For instance, vehicles, hardware, software are categories of assets or configuration items.
  • Sub-Category: the second level of asset grouping. A category can have many sub-categories. For instance, Vehicle.Trucks, Vehicle.Cars, Hardware.Server, and Hardware.PC.
  • Asset Group: the leaf level of asset grouping. Asset group was called "Asset Type' prior to R10. An asset group represents a group of identical assets. It is normally defined for equipment assets of the same make and model.
    • An Asset Group is also an inventory item number and links assets and inventory items.
    • Spare parts of assets are defined at asset groups. Therefore, if you have 10 identical assets, you just need to defined an asset group, and add spares to the asset groups manually or automatically by Calem when parts are checked out to work orders. There is no need to add spare parts to every asset.

Here is an example:

  • "Vehicle.Truck" is a sub-category for trucks.
  • "FORD F-150" and "GM Silverado" are asset groups.
  • Each individual truck can be defined as an asset with asset groups and categories set properly (see diagram below).

See Calem Enterprise User Guide for more info including steps to discover and define asset groups.
